Customer and robot data
A facility of a multinational snack supplier. Customer was looking for a solution to palletize frozen products from stainless steel carts.
ABB, IRC5 Multimove controller:
- IRB660 – 180 kg
- IRB460 – 110 kg
- IRB460 – 110 kg
- MU100
Three robots on one IRC5 controller incl. additional axis.
Issue
± 30 products per minute, +15 different products/stacking patterns. Products are randomly stacked in stainless steel carts with deviations in height layers. Unloading, stacking, wrapping. Safety: “Performance level D”. Carts can be fed directly from shock freezers. Automatic pallet destacker. Different types of slipsheets.
Solution
A multimove robot system, three robots, one controller. Cart is placed in front of intake position. Product is scanned by bar code. Cart is pulled into cell through light screens. Carts are unloaded by two robots. One robot scans the height of the layer and positions itself in front of the layer. The second robot receives the height and positions itself at the correct height. Robot 1 has a push bar with height scanner. Robot 2 has a conveyor belt as a tool. Robot 1 pushes an entire cart row onto robot 2’s conveyor in one stroke, then it leaves for the box conveyor to dispose of them. The boxes are reoriented as needed according to the stacking pattern. After this, the product is prepared. 2 possible orientations with spaces between the boxes when needed. The third robot grabs half of the layer in one pass. Due to position-controlled servo forks, the products can always be clamped against end stops with sufficient support. Pallets are automatically unstacked and placed in the cell, after which the third robot can pick two types of intermediate sheets as well as boxes. Once the pallet is full, it runs into the wrapper where it is foiled and sealed. The operator only has to enter carts and take off completed pallets, periodic filling of interleaves and pallet destacker. The whole operation can be well managed by only one operator. The robots are equipped with “SafeMove,” and Collision Avoidance. Both systems control in parallel the position and direction of the robot including tools. This ensures the safety of operators and material. Collisions with/through the fencing are thus eliminated.
